How the App Works

The Timeline Import app follows a straightforward 4-step process:

Step 1 — Export Your Google Maps Timeline File

Follow these steps to export your Google Maps Timeline data as a JSON file from your phone:

  1. Open the Google Maps app: Tap the “Get my file” button below.

  2. Tap your account icon: In the top-right corner, tap your account/profile icon.

  3. Access Your Timeline: From the dropdown menu, select “Your timeline.”

  4. Open Location Settings: Tap the menu (three dots) in the top-right corner.

  5. Select Export option: Choose “Location and privacy settings”, then tap “Export Timeline data.”

  6. Follow the prompts: Complete the export steps and save the file to your phone’s storage or share it to cloud storage.

💡 Tip: Your file will be saved as location-history.json — you’ll need this in the next step.

Step 2 — Select a Month to Import

Your Timeline file may include trips from multiple months.
The app will automatically detect the months and show you how many trips are available for each.

During your free trial, you can import one month for free.

To import:

  1. Review the list of available months.

  2. Tap the month you want to start with.

  3. If you don’t have an account yet, the app will ask you to Log in or Create an account before continuing.

➡️ You can import monthly, or—during tax season—run through all 12 months back-to-back in one quick session.

Step 3 — Review & Edit Your Imported Trips

After choosing a month:

  • Trips will be imported into your account.

  • You can review trip routes, addresses, and categories, then proceed to generate your report.

  • If Google’s GPS was slightly off (e.g., a pickup point is a few houses away), you can adjust details in our editor.

  • All edits sync to your MileageWise Web Dashboard, where you can generate your final IRS-Proof mileage log.

Your imported trips now form the foundation of your audit-proof mileage report.

Next Steps: Generate Your IRS-Proof Mileage Log

After importing your months, you can review and edit your trips right in the mobile app.
For full mileage-log finalization, your data also syncs automatically to the MileageWise Web Dashboard, where the workflow is even more streamlined.

From there, you can:

  • Run the IRS Compliance Check

  • Clean up or fine-tune your log

  • Add missing clients or locations

  • Export PDF, Excel, or CSV mileage reports

You’ll have a clean, accurate, audit-proof mileage log in minutes.
